Education Programmes
EDUCATION
The Shorebird Centre offers education programmes for both day visits
and overnight camps. The displays at the Centre form the basis for
excellent learning experiences. These include an interpretative talk
covering subjects such as bird basics and biology, estuaries,
shorebird migration, and related conservation issues, followed by excursions
into the field. Migration studies are a particular specialty. These can
be tailored to all ages from new entrants upwards.
This is a popular programme with many schools, and is particularly
suited to schools in the Auckland and Waikato areas, from which a day
visit can be made.
A resource kit for schools on Wader Migration is available on
request. This kit is closely aligned with the current
curriculum. The kit can also be accessed on the web at the
Department of Conservation,
Shorebird Education Kit
.
The Shorebird Centre also hosts
other education experiences for its members and the general public.
These include lectures, excursions and workshops on topics such as
shorebird identification, coastal ecology, photography and botany. We also
run a comprehensive 6 day residential field course which includes sessions
on various aspects of ornithology including catching and banding birds.
Further details are in our Events Calendar.
